My son Noah weighed 9.5 lbs when he was born. Because of his size, he had problems with low blood sugar. The nurse told me I had to give him formula to try and bring his blood sugar up. I had breastfed both of my other children and knew I wanted to breastfeed Noah too. I told the nurses I didn’t want to risk giving him a bottle and disrupt any success I had already had. The nurse told me if I didn’t give him formula his blood sugar levels would continue to go down and he would end up in the NICU. So, I called Christy. Her background as a Registered Nurse on top of being a Board Certified Lactation Counselor really helped me. She knew the nurses protocol and how I could follow that and keep breastfeeding Noah. She told me to ask for a supplemental nursing system. She then came to the hospital to help me use it and make sure Noah was getting a good latch. At a time when I was very vulnerable after just having a baby and being told my baby could end up in the NICU, I was extremely grateful for Christy! Noah stayed out of the NICU and continued to breastfeed for over a year.
